I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season with family and friends, and I wish you all a Happy Year of the Snake!
The January Nisei Lunch meal featured a Bento Box. In years past, we have catered out the Bento from various restaurants throughout the city, however since Jim Shinbo joined our Nisei Lunch team as our in-house chef, we have relied on Jim’s skills and expertise to create a Bento for the lunch. Jim did an excellent job of preparing the various condiments including teriyaki chicken, tsukemono. Umani and Liz Olschefski provided homemade takuan for the Bento.
I must mention that for this year’s Bento we did cater a special treat for our guests. We asked the folks at Onigiri Sanzan to provide the Onigiri for our lunch (see photo). Onigiri Sanzan offered two different types of fillings for the Onigiri…. a Tuna mayo and a Salmon. The rice used in their Onigiri is 100% Japanese Yukiwakamaru rice imported directly from Yamagata, Japan, and one can taste the difference in the quality and texture of the rice.
We celebrated a very special birthday (see photo). Sue Uriyu celebrated her 101st birthday on January 2nd…… Congratulations Sue! Sue has been a regular attendee for years, and it is so nice to be able to celebrate such a significant milestone.
To our amazing Nisei Lunch guests and volunteers…Thank you for your support and wishing you a year full of success and happiness!!!
