Last year, the NVC and the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington (JCCCW) entered a partnership involving their Summer Camp program.  Campers from 7 to 16 years of age tour the NVC Memorial Hall and learn about the WWII Nisei Soldier, the Japanese American experience during WWII, and NVC’s history.

The ‘campers’ examined artifacts in the Go For Broke room.  Edie Kitajo approached me and said, “I think my grandfather made that dresser over there!” (See photo 1).

Later that evening, Edie’s mom, Jen Kitajo, emailed me about their conversation about the dresser.  Both were excited that their great-grandfather made the dresser while incarcerated at Tule Lake, California!  (See Photo 2).

Later that week, the daughter and mom visited NVC to see the dresser!  (See photo 3).  News spread fast within their family, and we hope to coordinate a visit soon!
