Please join the Seattle Nisei Veterans Committee (NVC) for a free screening of “THE VOLUNTEER”, a 35-minute documentary, on Saturday, September 14, 2:00pm, at NVC Memorial Hall.

The film tells the story of Bruce Nakashima, a Veteran of the Vietnam War, and his close but unlikely friendship with L.V. Hendking, a soldier from Birmingham, Alabama, who eventually saved Bruce’s life, before they were separated and lost contact.

“THE VOLUNTEEER” follows Bruce’s fifty-year search for L.V., with intimate, heartwarming and occasionally hilarious asides and revelations.  It explores the power of friendship and loyalty, the weight of family expectations, and the complexities of American identity as Bruce struggles to overcome his guilt, anger, and shame, and find a sense of belonging.

We will be joined after the screening for a question-and-answer session with Director and Co-writer of the film, David Brodie.  David has been an editor in the documentary film and commercial film industry for 20 years.  David’s accomplishments have included working on projects with Netflix and Apple +.  David received an Emmy for his editing work on a short film, “Survivors” by Errol Morris.  David has also worked as editor on several Oscar nominated documentaries.  “The Volunteer” is David’s first documentary project as a director.
