Where can you get ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT pancakes, ham, rice, Portuguese Sausage, and eggs with a bottomless cup of coffee and juice and some of the finest company in the world? At the infamous First Hill Lions Pancake Breakfast! This community event is back after a 3-year hiatus and diners were taking selfies like they hadn’t seen each other in three years. Close to 650 breakfasts were served and although that isn’t a record, Lions couldn’t have been happier with that many friends and family being able to get together again over a plate of the best breakfast in town.
A main attraction of this event has always been the Bake Sale. Ellen Suzuki’s famous apple pies fly off the table, and the Lions wanted to be sure people would have the same delicious opportunity this year. The pie baking crew was ready, but a kitchen big enough to accommodate the crew was the challenge. A couple of the Lions made inquiries to the Nisei Veterans Committee (NVC), and we were thrilled to learn that this was possible. The bakers arrived at 9am on Saturday morning (February 25) and got to work. The kitchen was perfect. Room to roll pie dough; room to peel apples; room to mix up the crumble; room to cool pies; room to assemble boxes. And, the bonus was getting to hang out with the NVC Commander!
First Hill Lions are eternally grateful to the NVC for your generosity to use your commercial kitchen to prepare and bake the pies. It helped make our event a success. Proceeds from the breakfast support Kawabe House, Kin On, Nikkei Manor, and Legacy House.
