On Monday, May 27, a warm sun pierced thru the morning chill as the Nisei Veterans Committee and NVC Foundation and its community of members, volunteers, supporters, and friends successfully commemorated the 79th Annual Nisei Veterans Memorial Day Service at the well-manicured and historic grounds of Lake View Cemetery on Seattle’s scenic Capitol Hill.

NVC COL. JIMMIE KANAYA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY

Shane Deguchi is the son of NVC Foundation President Jay Deguchi and great-grandson of Yoshito Fujii. Deguchi is a graduating senior from Mercer Island High School. During his high school career, Deguchi spent much of his extracurricular time participating in high school sports.

MARK SHIGIHARA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY

Selena Liu is a second-year pharmaceutical doctorate student at the University of Washington in Seattle. Liu completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Washington in 2022, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Chemistry.

EVERGREEN-WASHELLI FLAG PLACING

Under cold and damp weather during the Memorial Day weekend, the Scouts from Seattle Betsuin Temple placed US flags at the gravesites of Nisei Veterans interred at Evergreen-Washelli cemetery.  

A DAY TO REMEMBER

The NVC traditionally participates in the Cathay Post 186’s Memorial Day Ceremony.  This year was no different, and we were delighted to receive an invitation to lay a wreath at the Chinese American Soldier Memorial in honor of those killed in action during WWII.

JACL REMEMBRANCE GALLERY PREVIEW

Puyallup Valley JACL Remembrance Gallery will permanently list those imprisoned at the “Puyallup Assembly Center” and bring to light the social injustices endured during 1942, while drawing parallels to contemporary issues of xenophobia and racism.

EMERALD DOWN A DAY AT THE RACES

On June 2, 2024, members from the Seattle Nisei Veterans Committee, NVC Foundation, the Japan Business Association of Seattle (JBA) and representatives from the Japanese Consulate in Seattle and Rising Star Stables, gathered at the Emerald Downs Racetrack.

NVC ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The NVC Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024. First Tee time is at 10:50 AM at Foster Golf Links, 13500 Interurban Ave South, Tukwila, WA 98168. Men’s & Women’s medal low net. Rib Steak dinner to follow at Nisei Vets Memorial Hall. Learn more.
