Japan Fair / “Connecting the Communities and the World” Saturday & Sunday, July 8 & 9, 2023 Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue

Japan Fair is a free, two-day festival in Bellevue, WA, that celebrates Japanese art and culture. Japan Fair is a communal endeavor of musicians, artisans, community organizations, and businesses from both Japan and the U.S. who come together to share their products, talents, and knowledge of Japan. Through live performances, hands on exhibits, cultural workshops, and vendor booths, the public is immersed in the music, dance, artisanry, and philosophy of Japan. A distinguished panel will discuss the linguistic bridges across the Pacific that have allowed players like Kazuhiro Sasaki, Hideko Nomo, Ichiro Suzuki, and Shohei Ohtani to utilize their baseball skills in both Japan and the United States. Moderated by Mona Lee Locke.

Bon Odori is a traditional summer festival event in which we honor our ancestors who have passed on, remember and appreciate all they have done for us, and celebrate their ongoing presence in the lives we enjoy today. The Seattle Obon Event features a variety of American and Japanese foods for sale, games, cultural displays, Odori / Dancing, Beer Garden with live jazz on Saturday, Ikebana display, Martial Arts demonstrations, and Seattle Matsuri Taiko performances.

Join Nikkei Manor residents at the annual Bon Odori Summer Festival and celebrate with dance, food, and vendor booths with local artists and crafters selling handmade goods. Performances: Northwest Taiko, Okinawa Kenjin Kai Chijinshuu, and Hana Hou Ukelele Band. Vendors: Shishido Creative, Gail Komorita, Kibeco Box, and Aga Daniels.

The annual Bon Odori Festival will be held on Saturday, July 22. Everyone is welcome to join to dance for joy to loved ones who have passed away and to honor ancestors. Program includes:

Okinawa Kenjin Kai Taiko, Dance, and Uta Group, Children’s Lantern Parade led by a Shishimai (Lion Dog), Short Hatsubon Service, Welcome Speech by Mayor of Auburn, Seattle Matsuri Taiko, and Bon Odori / Dances!

From Hiroshima to Hope Sunday, August 6, 6:00pm – 9:00pm North Shore of Green Lake Park

On Saturday, August 6, candle-lit lanterns will again float across Green Lake at From Hiroshima to Hope, Seattle’s annual peace event honoring the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence. This August marks the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombings and the 81st anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans on the U.S. West Coast. Pre-program activities begin at 6:00pm, and a family program with music, poetry and speakers begins at 7:00pm. Lantern floating will begin at 8:15pm.
